Resume Tips

You may be asking yourself, why not just write my own resume, or ask a friend or colleague to help? Or simply mine the Internet for resume tips, advice and generic templates? These are fair questions. Some people do write their own resume, or at least try, using found tips, including those below, and other resources.

But the issue boils down to this: As good a writer as you might be, it's nearly impossible to see your own words objectively. And if a well meaning friend or colleague helps you, are they up on the very latest industry standards? Are they familiar with industry keywords, formats and stylistic principles? For that matter, are you?

Sure, the Internet may offer untold pages of resume advice, but is it current? When a new resume screening tool comes out, or if your industry of choice advances their technology, will the information and advice you glean from the Internet still be relevant?

Think of it this way: Aside from the few of us who are true DIY-ers, when it comes to fixing our home heat and air conditioning or building a new deck, rather than risk a homemade fiasco, we call a professional. The same applies for your resume. A professionally written resume is a true investment in your career, so it pays to have it done right, by an experienced expert.

With that said, there are some basic resume tips that are consistent over time, and reach across most industries. Below are some to get you started. If after incorporating these tips in your resume, you're not getting the responses you expect—or deserve—it's a sign it might be time to call Jobfox and get some real-world advice.

CONTACT INFORMATION
Include your contact information at the top of your resume in a font size and style that is easy to read. Make sure to list your name, phone number(s), email address and Website (if applicable). You may want to leave off your street and city address if you are applying for jobs outside your area.

RELEVANCY OF CONTENT
Clearly state your skills, qualifications and achievements that are relevant to the job you are applying for and in a format that is appropriate for your industry and career level.

KEYWORDS
Find the right keywords to add to your resume by reviewing the job description and using similar keywords that you find. These will be terms specific to your industry and position. By including these keywords you may increase your odds of passing the automated screening systems.

USE NUMBERS
Include as many numbers as you can. Instead of saying you increased revenue at a company. Say you increased revenue by 20% month over month.

Testimonials

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical at first submitting my resume for review. Everyone is trying to make a quick buck and most products or services typically fall short of their "promises". Once I received the detailed critique from Melinda, I was pleasantly surprised and curious. I called and wanted to speak to a writer with Human Resources experience. That's where Bettie and I connected and it was obvious after one call that she could do the job.
Thank you,

Andrea
